Harvey Silverglate
For the past four decades, Harvey A. Silverglate—lawyer, writer, and advocate for civil liberty—has helped people get out of trouble, and with their approval, has shared some of their stories. His main areas of interest, in practicing law and in writing, are the campus and the courtroom. As an attorney, he’s advised and represented students in trouble, and in the state and federal criminal justice system, he’s taken on tax evasion, fraud, police misconduct, and espionage cases, among others. He is currently counsel to the Boston law firm Zalkind, Rodriguez, Lunt & Duncan LLP. In Silverglate’s parallel writing career, he’s been contributing to the alternative-weekly Boston Phoenix since Nixon, and for seven years (1994-2001) was a bi-monthly civil liberties columnist for the National Law Journal. He has been published in many national and regional newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal and the Boston Globe, and his work has appeared in popular as well as scholarly journals. In 1998, he co-authored The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America’s Campuses with Alan Charles Kors, whom the New York Times Book Review rightly labeled “civil libertarians who support everyone's right to sound off.” In 2009, after publication of Silverglate’s Three Felonies a Day, which brought to light problems in the federal justice system, Wall Street Journal columnist Gordon Crovitz pegged Silverglate as “a persistent, principled critic of overbroad statutes.” He is currently chairman of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to protecting academic freedom, due process, and freedom of speech on campus, as well as an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute. Silverglate lives with his wife, portrait photographer Elsa Dorfman, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Follow him on Twitter @3Felonies and at Facebook.com/silverglate.
